meet the maker
Hello, I'm Heather, the face behind Driftwood+Twine.
Crafting is a brilliant antidote to the stresses of everyday life and macramé is one of the most accessible crafts you’ll find. Mindful therapy in a ball of string!

For as long as I can remember I’ve had a craft project on the go; it was always my favourite thing to do. It started with junk sessions at school and the Blue Peter ‘makes’ at home... egg cartons, washing up liquid bottles and cereal boxes were never thrown out, always destined for a second life as a fairytale castle, a piece of furniture for my Sindy doll or some other fantasy creation. Mum taught us to knit, crochet and sew so we could make dolls clothes and later, our own, and her Golden Hands magazine was the best thing I read each week!

After a long career in radio and then international public relations, I turned to my creative skills to a luxury cake design business. It was in its infancy, becoming established when sadly, the twin blows of the pandemic and Mum’s failing health made the logistics too tricky to maintain. So, looking for something creative, transportable and non-perishable that I could build into a business while I while I looked after my mum, I turned to a craft I’d loved as a youngster: macramé.

It turned out to be even better than I remembered, adult me finding that, in addition to providing a creative outlet and business opportunity, it had a mindful quality I hadn’t realised when I was busily knotting away for my Crafter badge in the Girl Guides. Something I could sit peacefully with, the gentle rhythm of the knotting a joyful antidote to life's stresses.

I’m determined now to live a mindful, slower life, being more intentional with what I choose to do and being present in the moment. When I set an intention for 2023 (I don’t make resolutions) it was self-care. To live in the moment, pay attention to what I eat and how I live, choose to do what makes me happy and say no to the things that don’t. Macramé will be a part of that – as will trying other crafts as well. I’m determined that this year I will throw a pot!

My main goal is to share my passion for macramé with you, so that you, too, can tap into its gentle, therapeutic benefits. Whether that’s by way of a downloadable PDF so you can pick up a ball of string and have a go, or through one of my mindful crafting kits with everything you need to make a plant hanger or some wall art. Perhaps your passion is houseplants and one of my handmade plant hangers will be your connection to the craft that has its roots in 13th Century Persia. Or maybe you’ll join one of my local workshops. You could also follow me on Instagram where I share tips for slow living and bringing more mindfulness to your everyday.

Whichever appeals to you, I hope you’ll join me in the wonderful mindful macramé community.
